Scripture and Announcements for February 19

Matthew  4:1-11

Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted[a] by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’[b]

Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written:

“‘He will command his angels concerning you,
    and they will lift you up in their hands,
    so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’[c]

Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’[d]

Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”

10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’[e]

11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.

Sermon for February 12, 2023

CERRO GORDO CHURCH OF THE BRETHREN

February 12, 2023

Let Us Worship – Part 3

What does it mean for you to worship?

Have you thought about what it means for you to worship? Are there certain things you do that draws you closer to the Lord? The Bible talks of five different things or ways to worship the Lord.

The first is to be a part of teaching the word or preaching of the word. In 1 Corinthians 4:16-17 we read: 16 Therefore I urge you to imitate me. 17 For this reason I have sent to you Timothy, my son whom I love, who is faithful in the Lord. He will remind you of my way of life in Christ Jesus, which agrees with what I teach everywhere in every church. Paul is teaching and preaching the in churches about Jesus and that is the first way to learn and worship the Lord.

The next way to worship stated in scripture is by singing songs that honor and glorify God. In Ephesians 5:19-20 we read: 19 speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Clearly singing songs to our Lord is another way we are encouraged to worship the Lord.

The third way to worship the Lord is with our prayers. In Acts 1:13-14 it says: 13 When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. 14 They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers. Here we see a number of people praying for God’s will to be done after Jesus had ascended back to the Father. We know Jesus often separated for a while from his disciples to pray to God the Father, so we see prayer both as a group or congregation, as well as individually, is another way to worship the Lord.

Another way to worship the Lord is with our tithe. In

2 Corinthians:7-12: Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. As it is written:

“They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor;
    their righteousness endures forever.”[a]

10 Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. 11 You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.

12 This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God.

We see the fourth way to worship the Lord by giving back to the Lord as he has blessed us.

The 5th way to worship the Lord is to share in communion. As we come together to share in the bread and cup, we acknowledge to God what has been done for us through Jesus Christ. In 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 we read: 23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

Another way to worship the Lord is to recognize the depth of God’s love that he was willing to go to the cross to pay for our sins and a way to do that is to share in the bread and cup.

There are five specific ways to worship that are shown to us in the Bible. Most of us have come to church believing that listening or sharing in the word of God is a way to worship the Lord. Most everyone believes singing songs that tell the stories of God’s love and mercy is another way to worship the Lord. Of course, prayer time is mentioned many times in scripture so we probably always have realized praying either individually or as a congregation is another way to worship the Lord, but have you realized the gifts and offerings you give to this church, to other ministries or even to those of God’s children in need is another form of worship that God honors?

The last one mentioned is when we share in communion. Have you considered that is also a God honoring form of worship? Sharing in communion is an intentional act of obedience established in scripture. When we share in communion, we are telling the Lord, “Thank you for taking my place on the cross. Thank you for paying the price for my sins. I love you and know I need a savior.”

At the very least, these are 5 different ways of worship that we are given examples of in scripture. As you have been thinking about what draws you closest to God, how many of these 5 do you most closely relate to? God wants to have a relationship with us and that is why worship is important. Families that do things together, whether it is work or play, are stronger than those who do not. God wants us to have that close relationship that will make us stronger as well. Whether you are worshipping the Lord individually or as a church family, we will be better equipped to face life’s up and downs if our faith is strong. Worship is one of the ways to build up our faith. Whether it is singing songs of praise, reading God’s word, praying, coming together to listen to God’s word, giving of offerings or sharing in communion, God is there with us building us up and reviving our spirits. So let us worship the Lord in whatever ways draws us closer to God.

Pastor Larry

Scripture and Announcements for January 15

Psalm 100

A psalm. For giving grateful praise.

Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth.
    Worship the Lord with gladness;
    come before him with joyful songs.
Know that the Lord is God.
    It is he who made us, and we are his;
    we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving
    and his courts with praise;
    give thanks to him and praise his name.
For the Lord is good and his love endures forever;
    his faithfulness continues through all generations.

 Epiphany Sunday

Matthew 2:1-12

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him."

When King Herod heard this, he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. When he had called together all the people's chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ was to be Born.

"In Bethlehem in Judea," they replied, "for this is what the prophet has written:

But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel."

Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and make a careful search for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.

After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshipped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold ad of incense and of myrrh.

And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.

Happy New Year Sermon and Announcements

CERRO GORDO CHURCH OF THE BRETHREN

January 1, 2023

Are you happy or sad to 2022 go?

Psalm 16:5-6

Happy New Year! What is your answer to the question that is asked in the sermon title? Is today just another day? I would like us in our own way, to think for a few minutes about the year 2022, what are  your thoughts? For you, your family, your friends, was it a good year? Were there any special moments this past year that will remain with you for a long time? As I continue to ask questions of a more personal kind, compared to other years how do you rate 2022? I take a bit of time of reflection when we turn the calendar from one year to another. There have been some years that I would have liked to have seen never end. There have been others that I was ready to see what a new year would bring. The fact is in many ways it may be more symbolic than real that one year is really better than another.

In the scripture we read today we see an acknowledgment that God is in control. The 5th verse honestly states, “Lord, you have assigned me my portion and my cup you have made my lot secure.” When we consider how we believe 2022 went, we need to realize God is there providing us with what we need to live life. We are also given the ability to trust and rely on God for much of what we need or we can go out on our own. It is our choice. Verse 6 says, “The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance.” Notice it says the boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places. Again, pointing out God has allowed good things, even one might say caused good things to come my way.  I do not want to say God does not allow us any ability to make things better for ourselves or our families or make things worse. God gives us a lot of options. Which ones we choose is up to us. What I am saying is each year begins and ends with God rooting us on.

As we take a broader look at 2022, we can reflect on things that have happened in our community, our state, our nation and in the world. Is our community in a better place today than it was at the start of 2022? How about our state, our nation, this world we live in. Each person here this morning may have a different answer for each one of these questions. We all view life in different ways. God made us uniquely different, so it is only natural that not everyone views things the same way.

Let’s move on to one more question about 2022. Spiritually what kind of year has 2022 been for you? As Christians this is really the most important question. Has 2022 been a year in which you have grown closer and stronger in the Lord? Or has 2022 been a year that has been a struggle because it seems there have been more questions than answers. Oftentimes health problems, financial problems and relationship problems make life difficult. Satan is always trying to tell us God does not care about what we are going through. Of course, that is a lie but that is all Satan knows how to do. So, as I mentioned all those things to consider, what do you think?

Looking first at the last question about how 2022 has been for you and me spiritually, what is your answer? I would like to read the last five verses of the 16th chapter of Pslam at this time as you consider your answer.

I will praise the Lord, who counsels me;
    even at night my heart instructs me.
I keep my eyes always on the Lord.
    With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.

Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
    my body also will rest secure,
10 because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,
    nor will you let your faithful one see decay.
11 You make known to me the path of life;
    you will fill me with joy in your presence,
    with eternal pleasures at your right hand.

If we can somehow make verse 7 and 8 our verses as we face life, every year can be a year full of promise and hope. I especially like what verse 8 says. “I have set the Lord always before me, because he is at my right hand. I will not be shaken.” Man, if we can lock these words into our hearts and minds. Nothing can or will defeat us. The second half of the verse 8 says it all, because he (God) is at my right hand I will not be shaken. What a powerful statement of faith and trust. That is where God wants us to be.

So, as we begin 2023, let us be honest about what may have gone right and what may have gone wrong in 2022. After we spend a little time reflecting on that though, it is time to look forward to this new year we are beginning. There may be times of great joy and there may be moments of deep sorrow. There may also be everything in between. No matter what 2023 brings our way, if we allow the Lord to help us grow spiritually to the point we can honestly say, “I have set the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.” If more times than not we face every situation that comes our way with that kind of confidence, the Lord will see to it 2023 is a year of victory. Have a blessed and victorious 2023! The Lord is with you every minute of the day if we only let him.

Fourth Sunday of Advent

CERRO GORDO CHURCH OF THE BRETHREN

December 18, 2022

This Week's Scripture:

It’s Really True!

Luke 1:39-79

Mary Visits Elizabeth

At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”

Mary’s Song

And Mary said:

“My soul glorifies the Lord
    and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for he has been mindful
    of the humble state of his servant.
From now on all generations will call me blessed,
    for the Mighty One has done great things for me—
    holy is his name.
His mercy extends to those who fear him,
    from generation to generation.
He has performed mighty deeds with his arm;
    he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.
He has brought down rulers from their thrones
    but has lifted up the humble.
He has filled the hungry with good things
    but has sent the rich away empty.
He has helped his servant Israel,
    remembering to be merciful
to Abraham and his descendants forever,
    just as he promised our ancestors.”

Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home.

The Birth of John the Baptist

When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son. Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they shared her joy.

On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to name him after his father Zechariah, but his mother spoke up and said, “No! He is to be called John.”

They said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who has that name.”

Then they made signs to his father, to find out what he would like to name the child. He asked for a writing tablet, and to everyone’s astonishment he wrote, “His name is John.” Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue set free, and he began to speak, praising God. All the neighbors were filled with awe, and throughout the hill country of Judea people were talking about all these things. Everyone who heard this wondered about it, asking, “What then is this child going to be?” For the Lord’s hand was with him.

Zechariah’s Song

His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied:

“Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel,
    because he has come to his people and redeemed them.
He has raised up a horn of salvation for us
    in the house of his servant David
(as he said through his holy prophets of long ago),
salvation from our enemies
    and from the hand of all who hate us—
to show mercy to our ancestors
    and to remember his holy covenant,
    the oath he swore to our father Abraham:
to rescue us from the hand of our enemies,
    and to enable us to serve him without fear
    in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.

And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High;
    for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him,
to give his people the knowledge of salvation
    through the forgiveness of their sins,
because of the tender mercy of our God,
    by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven
to shine on those living in darkness
    and in the shadow of death,
to guide our feet into the path of peace.”
